PBOTD 8th June: Walter Farley - The Black Stallion and Satan

Today's PBOTD carries on yesterday's theme - racing - because it's Belmont Stakes Day in the States.

Walter Farley's Black Stallion series covered the race: in The Black Stallion and Satan, the Black Stallion's son, Satan, wins the Belmont Stakes, and therefore the Triple Crown of American races, because he's already won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes.

Random House, 1949, illus Milton Menasco

In this book, Satan is a reformed character, which Alec finds difficult to accept. He was always the one who had a special relationship with Satan before, that intoxicating affirmation from a horse that yes, you are someone special.

Fortunately for Alec, he finds out he's been left The Black, who is just as wilful and one man as ever.
